Haven't Filed Your Taxes for One or More Years?

Get organized and take the next step. JMLINCE Tax Services can help review your filing history, identify records to gather, assist with IRS transcript requests, and prepare prior-year federal and California tax returns when required.

Prior-Year Tax Services

Whether you missed one filing year or several, the first step is understanding what has—and has not—been filed and what records are available.

Unfiled Tax Returns

Preparation of required prior-year federal and California individual income tax returns, based on your filing situation and available records.

IRS Transcript Assistance

Guidance on accessing or requesting IRS transcripts that may help identify reported income, prior filings, and account activity.

Multiple-Year Filing

Organize missing years, review the documents needed for each year, and prepare returns in an appropriate order.

Missing Income Records

Use available wage and income information, such as reported W-2 and 1099 data, to help identify records you may need to obtain or verify.

IRS and FTB Notice Review

Help you understand the general purpose of a tax notice, identify requested filing years and documents, and discuss appropriate next steps.

Amended Tax Returns

Review information about a previously filed return and determine whether an amended return may be appropriate.

How IRS Transcripts Can Help

IRS transcripts can provide useful information when original tax documents or copies of previously filed returns are unavailable.

Wage and Income Transcript

Shows information reported to the IRS by employers, banks, and other payers, such as W-2 and 1099 information. It may help identify income documents to review.

Account Transcript

Shows tax account activity, including certain payments, assessments, and adjustments.

Return Transcript

Shows most line items from a processed tax return. It can help when a copy of a previously filed return is needed for reference.

Verification of Nonfiling

Indicates that the IRS has no processed return on record for the requested period. It does not, by itself, determine whether you were required to file.

Our Process

We start by understanding your situation. Not everyone with a missing return has the same filing requirements.

1. Discuss Your Filing History

Identify the tax years you believe are unfiled, your general income sources, and any IRS or FTB notices you have received.

2. Identify Needed Records

Review available prior returns, tax documents, and relevant IRS transcripts. We will identify missing information that may need follow-up.

3. Review Filing Requirements

Evaluate each year separately. A missing return does not automatically mean a return was legally required for that year.

4. Prepare Applicable Returns

Once the scope, records, and fees are agreed upon, prepare the applicable prior-year returns for your review and signature.

What to Bring to Your First Review

  • Tax years you believe you have not filed
  • Copies of any prior-year tax returns you have
  • Any IRS or California FTB notices
  • Available W-2, 1099, and other income documents
  • Business income and expense summaries, if self-employed
  • Information about dependents and filing status for the relevant years

Do not send Social Security numbers, dates of birth, bank account information, or other sensitive personal information through regular email.

Important Information

Filing requirements, refund eligibility, penalties, interest, and collection procedures depend on the taxpayer's facts and the tax year involved. The IRS or California Franchise Tax Board may request specific returns or information in a notice. Review the notice and its response deadline carefully.

JMLINCE Tax Services provides tax preparation and related document and transcript assistance within the services and credentials permitted by law. Tax preparation and transcript assistance do not include legal advice or a guarantee of IRS or FTB resolution, penalty relief, refund, or collection outcome. Representation before the IRS or FTB is subject to separate authorization and applicable professional eligibility rules.

Fees depend on the number of years, forms, records, and complexity involved. A fee estimate will be discussed before preparation begins.
